Hearing Dolly Parton’s rendition of “Two Lovers,” even with drum machine, is a revelation. Dolly’s voice incredibly wraps itself around Smokey Robinson’s words with power and meaning. Then too, Louise Cordet’s short and sassy take on the composition is energetic and more uptempo than Mary Well’s blues/pop original. There’s a remake of Wells’ version which companies liked to do, re-creating hits with the original artist, and an amazing duet with composer Robinson from a television show.
The song itself is not about two lovers, it’s about a schizophrenic who loves and abuses the protagonist. Many of us were in those kind of relationships years ago, and the only antidote is to actually find two or more people to love. To truly have two lovers. And, hopefully, all live in harmony under the same roof. JV 4:28 pm Sunday Jan 11, 2026
